Firefighters bring learning to life

Our Prep children recently enjoyed an exciting and memorable visit from Eccles Fire Station, organised with the support of Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service. This hands-on experience brought their PSHE learning about careers and “people who help us” vividly to life, offering a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with the real world.

During the visit, the children learned about what it takes to be a firefighter, gaining insight into the skills, teamwork and dedication required for the role. They also explored the essential part firefighters play in keeping our communities safe. The session reinforced key safety messages in an engaging and age-appropriate way, helping pupils to better understand how to respond in emergency situations.

There was plenty of excitement as the children climbed inside the fire engine, examined the specialist equipment and tried on real firefighter helmets – which proved much heavier than many had expected! A particular highlight was having the chance to use the fire hose, an experience that sparked great enthusiasm and curiosity among the groups.

Visits such as this are carefully designed by the Fire Service to support National Curriculum outcomes while encouraging pupils’ moral, cultural, mental and physical development. By engaging with real-life professionals, children are better prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. These meaningful encounters help to promote the development of knowledge, understanding and skills needed to become informed and responsible citizens.

The visit clearly made a lasting impression, with several children already expressing aspirations to become firefighters in the future. It was a truly enriching and enjoyable learning experience, and we are very grateful to Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service for making it possible.

I am constantly amazed by what they have learnt at such an early age. The quality of teaching and learning is superb.
