Academic Departments – Maths

The Maths department is staffed by 3 full time and 1 part time member of staff. Between us we have a vast amount of teaching experience and a huge passion for the subject. Our staff are;

Mr I Cooper (Head of Mathematics), BEng University of Nottingham. I have 10 years of teaching experience both in the UK and abroad and have been the head of Maths at Bridgewater for the last 5 years.

Mr P Lawson, BSc University of Manchester. Mr Lawson has 25 years of teaching experience including 18 years at Bridgewater.

Miss N Ellis, BSc Keele University. Miss Ellis started her career at Walkden High School and is now in her 2nd year at Bridgewater.

Mrs Z Ahmad, BSc University of Bolton. Mrs Ahmad is the newest member to our department and is an experienced Psychology teacher who also teaches KS3 Maths.

‘Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations or algorithms: It is about understanding’ – William Thurston. Maths is an increasingly valued and crucial skill in modern society and we aim to not only teach students to complete questions but to enjoy the subject. Confidence is crucial to high achievement and we promote a demanding but supportive environment in which all students are confident to develop their knowledge.

Throughout the week, all teachers are available at break and lunchtimes on a drop in basis to support students as well as providing more formal help ‘clinics’ and multiple revision sessions for exam classes; These sessions run at lunch times, after school and also during holiday periods .

In KS3 we teach a broad curriculum following the Collins New Maths Frameworking books. For GCSE, which we begin during year 9, we follow the Edexcel linear course. At A level we follow the OCR Maths and Further Maths courses.

We aim to stretch and challenge all our students and to this extent we enter the more able students for the nationally recognised Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenge competitions. We also offer extension courses where appropriate in year 10 and 11 and currently run GCSE Statisitcs as an extra-curricular course.
