Examinations

At Bridgewater School we are committed to ensuring that all students are well prepared and confident for their forthcoming external examinations. Public examinations such as GCSEs, A Levels, BTEC and other vocational qualifications are an important milestone in a student’s education, and we work closely with students and families to ensure everyone understands what to expect.

In addition to preparing academically, it is essential that both students and parents / carers are familiar with the rules and procedures that apply during external examinations. These regulations are set by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) and must be followed by every candidate.

Instructions for candidates – examination guidance

The video below provides important guidance for students who will be taking external examinations. It explains what candidates should expect on the day of their exam and outlines the key rules and regulations that must be followed while in the examination room.

This guidance video has been produced to:

  • Help candidates understand what is expected of them on exam day
  • Explain the rules and regulations set out by the JCQ
  • Ensure students are familiar with correct exam procedure before attending their exams.

We strongly encourage all students who will be sitting external examinations to watch this video carefully ahead of the examination period.

External Exam Dates for Summer 2026

The first examination on the national timetable for GCSE is Thursday 7th May 2026.
The first examination on the national timetable for A Level is Monday 11th May 2026.

Please be aware that the awarding bodies have designated Wednesday 24th June 2026 as a ‘contingency day’ for examination. This means that in the event of national or local disruption to a day of examinations in summer 2026, the awarding bodies may, as a last resort, reschedule the examination to the published contingency date. Candidates should ensure they are available on that date and be mindful of this when making plans for the summer.

Students will receive a Statement of Entry in the spring term, showing all exam entries and scheduled exam dates and times. Students are advised to check this carefully to ensure they are fully aware of when their exams are scheduled and when they are needed to be in school. Any clashes will be discussed directly with students.

Any questions should be directed to our Exams Officer, Jane Casey. Email: caseyj@bridgewater-school.co.uk

Access Arrangements

A number of students are entitled to specific access arrangements such as extra time and the use of a laptop. Assessment of these needs and implementation of the arrangements is overseen by the school SENCO, Ms C Hemmings.
