Academic Departments – Drama

Miss L Grimes is the Drama teacher across KS3, KS4 and KS5, and also provides teaching in the Preparatory Department. At KS3 students receive a one hour lesson each week covering both scripted and devised performance. The curriculum is tailored to provide a smooth transition into GCSE with both written and practical work.

At KS4, students receive 5 one hour lessons over 2 weeks following the AQA specification. Moderation of practical examination takes place in the spring term with an evening showcase performance for invited audience. The written examination takes place in the summer term of Year 11.

At KS5, Students receive 8 one hour lessons over 2 weeks and benefit greatly from small class sizes. There are regular theatre visits to support academic progress and one to one tuition ensures students achieve their very best.

There is immense opportunity for all students to be involved in the extra – curricular life of the department in a variety of different roles as follows:

  • Acting
  • Directing
  • Dancing / Choreography
  • Singing
  • Stage Management
  • Lighting
  • Sound
  • Back Stage Crew
  • Wardrobe
  • Make – up
  • Props
  • Set design / construction
  • Reviews / Publicity

We stage one big musical each year for which auditions and rehearsals commence in the autumn term with sell out performances taking place in the Spring term. There are approximately 100 students from Prep V through to Year 13 involved in the current production of ‘Bugsy Malone’, which reflects the popularity of the subject.

There is also a lunchtime Drama club which includes an annual competition judged by A – Level Theatre Studies students.
