Academic Departments – Art

www.manchesterphoto.comMrs M Frayne is the Head of the Department and also a GCSE visiting moderator for AQA.

As a department we aim to develop an awareness of the implications of Art and develop a range of qualities. These include safety awareness, perseverance and initiative. Students are also encouraged to share their experiences and culture with others in order to enhance the quality of Art learning. The six Aims of the Department are reference points for individual teaching staff, and the Objectives stipulate how the Aims are put in to practice. The Art Department at Bridgewater School offers to all students, courses in General Art and Design through to GCSE and ‘AS’ and ‘A2 level. (AQA Art Craft and Design)

STRUCTURE OF THE DEPARTMENTAL CURRICULUM

PUPIL GROUPS
In year 7, 8 and 9 at Bridgewater School, all pupils will work to a structured framework of Themes and starting points, allowing pupils to have a personal input to the work they produce, and also be guided by the specialist knowledge of individual Teachers. (See long-term and medium-term planners). In 2014 it was instigated by Mrs Frayne that the department would limit the topics studied in the first two terms to allow for development of a particular theme in the final term in key stage 3. In this way students would focus on fewer areas over a period of time, but with a greater depth of enquiry. (This is highlighted in the general scheme of work outline) In recent years pupils in year 9 have participated and made accessories for the school’s annual Charity Fashion show, which forms a major part of the development of extra-curricular activities.

Year 7, 8, 9
In years 7-9 pupils are taught Art and Design in their Tutor Groups, of which there are two, each Group has approximately 20 – 24 pupils. Each Group has one hour period of Art and Design per week. Groups are taught by Mrs. Frayne.

Year 10 & 11
Pupils have a total of 5 hours of Art per 2 week cycle. Due to the nature and popularity of the subject at this level, groups can be up to a maximum of 20 pupils. Mrs. Frayne teaches all groups in year 10 and 11

Year 12 & 13
At ‘A’ level, both year 12 and 13 can at certain points be taught at the same time, due to small numbers who choose this subject at a higher level. A total of 8 teaching periods per week is allocated to the teaching of ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ level Art and Design. Numbers vary on a yearly basis; however it is usual practice to have approximately 2-4 pupils sitting this subject at any one time at each level. The group is taught by Mrs Frayne at different stages on the timetable
