Graduated with a BA in Philosophy from Durham University and was awarded both a ‘Contribution to College’ award by Van Mildert College and a ‘Special Contribution to Sports’ award during her study. Ali was also chosen to present her dissertation on Harriet Martineau and Victorian Feminism as part of the annual University College Feminist Conference. She has since completed a Masters in Security and International Law and is now a member of the National Youth Theatre’s Repertory Company.

“My sister Maddy and I started Bridgewater in Kindergarten and remained at school through to Sixth Form. I went on to study for a BA in Philosophy at Durham University and graduated with a 2:1 degree in 2017. I later studied for a Masters in Security and International Law at the University of Manchester. Soon after, I interned at the United Nations in New York City where I worked for the Department on Improving the UN’s Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse. I am now in London where I am a member of the National Youth Theatre’s Repertory Company.

Some of my fondest memories of Bridgewater were my A-level English Literature classes. It was in these classes I was really able to hone my analysis skills and develop the confidence to form my own opinions and back up my thoughts and arguments. These are skills I’ve found so useful in the working world, particularly when working at the UN where you are required to argue for and defend certain proposals.

I also adored my Theatre Studies classes; they provided me with the confidence to put myself out there and perform, again something that comes in very handy in an office environment when doing presentations or hosting meetings. However, my enjoyment of the class has also led me to pursue drama as a professional endeavour and not just a hobby. The foundational skills I acquired when at Sixth Form have subsequently led me to performing on a UK Theatre tour, doing several short films and I am now a member of NYT’s REP Company where I will be featuring as Desdemona in Othello on a UK tour, ending in London’s West End.”
