Prep Council gives pupils a voice
Here at Bridgewater, fostering student agency is a priority and the Prep Council is a dynamic embodiment of this commitment. The forum, available to pupils from Kindergarten through to Prep VI, provides an avenue for pupils to actively engage in their educational journey. It also provides a space where young minds can raise issues, discuss ideas and offer suggestions that resonate with their peers.
One of the most valuable aspects of the Prep Council is its ability to address real-world challenges faced by students. Whether it is supporting fellow pupils in the playground, enhancing classroom experiences, or providing assistance for challenges at home, the council plays a pivotal part.
Being a council member is more than just a role, it is a journey of personal growth and the skills involved in being an effective councillor are essential for any child. Effective communication, active listening, persuasive language, problem-solving and the art of compromise are all invaluable for their future endeavours.
The Prep Council also plays a vital role in nurturing the fundamental values of democracy within the school community. Through elections and decision-making processes, pupils learn about the principles of democracy, governance and civic responsibility, instilling these values from a young age.
Last year’s council were especially active, organising a range of fundraising events that have left a lasting impact. Under the expert guidance of Mrs Pritchard, their efforts culminated in the spectacular ‘Bridgewater’s Got Talent’, showcasing the incredible talent within the school. Another noteworthy initiative was the successful petitioning for the planting of two fruit trees, an enduring testament to their commitment to positive change.
