Prep pupil races towards his dream

Huge congratulations to Prep V pupil Oliver, who is making an impressive name for himself in the world of downhill mountain bike racing.

Oliver’s love of cycling began at the age of six, when he started riding freestyle BMX in skateparks. By the age of eight, he was already competing at a national level, finishing as runner-up in the British National BMX Freestyle Championships. His talent earned him a place on the British Cycling BMX Freestyle Academy – a prestigious development pathway for young riders with Olympic potential.

Alongside BMX, Oliver also enjoyed downhill mountain biking, initially taking part in a handful of local races. However, over the past year he has focused his attention on downhill racing, where his passion truly lies. Through determination, dedication and countless hours of training, he has developed both his skills and confidence, achieving remarkable success.

Although only 10 years old, Oliver often competes in the U13 category, racing against children up to two years older than himself. Despite the challenge, he continues to produce outstanding performances. This year alone, he has competed in nine races, standing on the podium an incredible eight times, with three first-place finishes, three second-place finishes and two third-place finishes.

Oliver’s ambition is to one day compete on the Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup circuit and he is already taking exciting steps towards that goal.

Recently, he travelled to Germany to compete in the PROPAIN Rookies Cup – his first international downhill mountain bike event. The PROPAIN Rookies Cup is an international junior downhill series featuring five races across Slovenia, Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany, attracting some of Europe’s most talented young riders.

Competing on larger, more technical courses than he had experienced before, Oliver rose to the occasion with an outstanding qualifying run, finishing 13th out of 65 riders in the U13 category, despite being one of the youngest competitors. During the race itself, Oliver suffered an unfortunate crash, costing him valuable time. Showing fantastic resilience and determination, he got back on his bike and completed the course, finishing a highly respectable 28th overall.

Oliver will return to Germany in September before taking on the full 2027 European racing season next year. Everyone at Bridgewater is incredibly proud of his achievements so far and we wish him every success, both on and off the track, as he continues to pursue his dream.

The freedom to be yourself is the greatest freedom of all
