GCSE 2026 – celebrating exceptional progress
GCSE Results Day 2026 has provided another opportunity for celebration, with one third of all grades awarded at 9-7 and students once again surpassing their baseline targets across all measures.
The results demonstrate strength across the curriculum, with particularly impressive performances at the highest level. Almost 50% of students were awarded a grade of 9-8 in English, alongside a quarter of all grades at 8 and above in both Physics and Chemistry. Art also delivered an exceptional set of results, with 70% of grades awarded at 9-7.
Across the year group, almost 60% of all grades were awarded at grade 6 and above, reflecting both the breadth of achievements and the strong progress made by students during their time at Bridgewater. Collectively, students surpassed the outcomes indicated by their baseline targets across all measures – reinforcing the value of a Bridgewater education and the importance placed on enabling every individual to fulfil their potential.
At Bridgewater, Key Stage 4 combines high expectations with expert guidance and individual attention. Alongside subject knowledge, students are supported to develop effective study skills, intellectual independence and resilience, preparing them not only for their GCSE examinations but for the demands of Sixth Form study and the opportunities beyond.
Academic Deputy Head of the Senior School, Mr Amin, praised the achievements of the year group:
“We are incredibly proud of everything our Year 11 students have achieved. These results reflect not only their ability, but the progress they have made through sustained effort, ambition and a willingness to challenge themselves.
“That progress is particularly important to us. Every young person arrives at Key Stage 4 with different strengths and starting points, and our role is to know them as individuals, encourage them to aim high and provide the teaching, guidance and support that enables them to achieve their very best. My congratulations go to every student, and to the staff and families who have supported them throughout their GCSE journey.”
Success has also extended beyond Year 11, with one third of our Year 10 students sitting their GCSE Statistics examination this year and achieving a 100% pass rate, with 78% of grades awarded at grade 6 and above. Taking the qualification a year early provides students with valuable experience of GCSE-level study and assessment as they progress through Key Stage 4.
The GCSE achievements following Sixth Form’s outstanding A Level results announced last week, when 65% of all grades were awarded at A*-B including 20% at A*-A, with a 100% pass rate across a wide range of subjects. The Class of 2026 will now progress to an exciting range of destinations, with students securing places at leading universities including Oxford, Liverpool, Newcastle and Leeds.
Together, the A Level and GCSE results provide a fitting celebration of academic achievement across Bridgewater’s Senior School and Sixth Form, reflecting an approach which combines aspiration and academic rigour with individual support and a determination to help every student make excellent progress.
All at Bridgewater School congratulate the students on their accomplishments and we extend our thanks to the staff and families who have supported them throughout their GCSE journey. These results reflect not only the hard work and commitment of the students themselves, but the strength of the partnership between home and school – working together to encourage and enable every young person to achieve their very best.
