Description of subject
Department ethos:
“Our aim is to encourage a wider appreciation, understanding and enjoyment of culture and spoken language through a variety of skills, activities and topical issues. Our emphasis is, therefore, on the practical study of living language.”
Languages are all around us; they are used in so many situations whether at work, on holiday or just casually in day-to-day life – we live in a multilingual global society.
Studying a language is a really smart move if you want a fascinating subject that offers you a range of career possibilities at the end and are a lot of fun along the way. Language courses are interesting and varied subjects to study and give you a broad range of knowledge and skills.
Learning a language is a never-ending process; languages are constantly changing, bringing in new words and getting rid of old ones. This is one of the great things about learning languages; you’re always up to speed with the world!
At Bridgewater School, Languages are a core compulsory subject, alongside Maths, English and Science. They are taught from Year 1 in the Primary School, until at least Year 11 in the Senior School.
Extra-curricular: World cinema Club (Sabrina Mason), Foreign Language Trips abroad (France, Belgium, Spain)
